PRINCETON, N.J. (November 13, 2005) —
Duke’s Katie Grant scored her second goal of the
game with 8:42 remaining in the second overtime to hand the University of
Connecticut field hockey team a 3-2 double-overtime loss in the quarterfinals of
the 2005 NCAA Tournament on Sunday afternoon at Princeton University.
UConn’s closes out its season at 17-6 overall and captured a share of the BIG
EAST Regular Season crown before winning the BIG EAST Tournament for the second
consecutive season to earn a berth in the NCAA Championship.
The Huskies advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth consecutive season
and the 17th time in the program’s history.
UConn (17-6) took the early lead when Kristin Galuski
(Latham, N.Y.) netted her team-leading 16th goal of the season to give the
Huskies a 1-0 lead just 1:49 into the contest.
Duke (17-4) responded with back-to-back goals to take a 2-1 advantage. Julie
Tromp scored off a corner 49 seconds before halftime and Grant followed with her
first score of the game at 52:29 to give Duke its first lead.
Lauren Aird (Harare, Zimbabwe) knotted the
game at 2-2 with her third score of the season at 57:31 to send the game into
overtime.
UConn goalkeeper Melissa Bostwick (San
Diego, Calif.) made seven saves in the loss. For the game, Duke out-shot UConn
17-11 and attempted 13 penalty corners to the Huskies’ eight.
