Peijs Named First Team All-American; Kleinhans And Wheeler Pick Up Second Team Honors

STORRS, Conn. (November 20, 2007) – University of Connecticut senior midfielder/forward Lizzy Peijs (Venlo, Holland) was named a First Team All-American by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. Husky junior back Jennifer Kleinhans (Mannheim, Germany) and junior midfielder Meghan Wheeler (Canton, Mass.) were named to the second team of the 2007 Longstretch/NFHCA squad.

Peijs (left) earned First Team All-American honors for the second year in row and was also named the 2007 BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year. In addition, she was an All-Mideast region pick this year.

Peijs was the leading scorer on the Husky team this year, as she scored 16 goals and had 11 assists for 43 points. She was second on the team with 106 shots and scored four game-winning goals during the season.

Peijs helped lead UConn to an overall record of 22-3 this past fall as UConn won the BIG EAST regular season and tournament titles before advancing to the national semifinals of the NCAA Tournament.

Kleinhans (left) was also a First Team All-American pick in 2006. She scored five goals and had four assists for UConn for 14 points as she started 24 of 25 games in the Husky backfield. Kleinhans was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight year and was also an All-Mideast pick. She was named an all-tournament pick at the BIG EAST Championship.

 

Wheeler (left), also a mainstay of the Husky backfield, tallied four assists on the season. Wheeler was also an All-Mideast selection, an All-BIG EAST first team selection and a BIG EAST all-tournament pick.
