No. 4 Field Hockey Wraps Up Preseason
With 1-1 Draw

STORRS, Conn. (August 27, 2008) - The No. 4
University of Connecticut field hockey team wrapped up its preseason slate with
a 1-1 draw against Durham University (England) on Wednesday afternoon at the
George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex.
Sophomore Melissa Gonzalez (Mohegan Lake,
N.Y.) gave the Huskies a 1-0 advantage with a goal off a feed from teammate
Lauren Aird (Harare, Zimbabwe) at the 37:54 mark
of the opening half.
Durham knotted the game at 1-1 with a score by Lauren Shirer of a penalty corner
setup by Emma Pledge and Amy Tippen at 52:30.
UConn goalkeeper Andrea Mainiero (Emmaus,
Pa.) allowed one goal while making four saves. Durham’s keeper, Amanda Jones,
turned away three UConn attempts while allowing one score.
For the game, Durham out-shot the Huskies 11-7 and attempted five penalty
corners to UConn’s four.
Connecticut opens the 2008 regular season on Saturday, August 30 against Sacred
Heart in a 12:00 p.m. (ET) start at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex.
