Huskies Hold Off Providence, 2-1

Freshman Kristen Russell (Dauphin, Manitoba) picked up the game winner on
the power play at the 9:29 mark in the third period as the University of
Connecticut women's ice hockey team defeated Providence, 2-1, on senior day in
the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum. With the win, the Huskies are now 12-20-1
overall and 10-10-0 in the Hockey East conference. Providence is now 16-13-4
overall and 10-8-2 against league competition. The Huskies came out firing to open the game, taking 14
shots on goal in the first stanza. On UConn's fifth shot, 4:55 into play, junior
Natalie Vibert (Thunder Bay, Ontario) connected with the back of the net
off of a pass from sophomore Jaclyn Hawkins (Manotick, Ontario) to score
the Huskies first goal of the game.
That was the only offense that either team could muster in the
first period and Connecticut headed into the second stanza with the
1-0 lead. Despite being called for three penalties in the second
period, UConn held the Friars scoreless with an extra skater on the
ice and were also scoreless in their own two power play opportunities.
Entering the third with a one goal advantage, UConn was able to hold off two
power play opportunities by Providence before Russell connected to score. She
was assisted on the goal by junior Alicia Ramolla (Barrie, Ontario) and
Vibert. The Huskies were able to fend off Providence for the next ten minutes
before Kathleen Smith scored with just 24 seconds remaining in the game to bring
Providence to within one. For the game, the Friars out-shot the Huskies,
36-30. UConn was 1-for-7 on the power play while Providence went 0-for-6 on the
power play. Senior Kaitlyn Shain (Calgary, Alberta) had 35 saves while
picking up the win for UConn. Jana Bugden had 28 saves in the loss for
Providence. The Huskies will be in action next on Sunday, Feb. 26 when they
travel to Providence to close out the season series. The game, which has playoff
implications, is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. |
