Huskies Close Out Season With 5-2 Loss At Providence

(February 26, 2006) - Providence College scored three goals in the third
period to close out a 5-2 victory over the University of Connecticut women's ice
hockey team on Saturday. With the loss, UConn is eliminated from playoff
contention and finish the season with a record of 12-21-1 overall and 10-11-0
against Hockey East opponents. Providence, who wrapped up the regular season
with a 17-13-4 overall mark and 11-8-2 record in the league, will receive a spot
in the Hockey East tournament. Providence got on the board first, scoring just
1:20 into the opening period. To close out the stanza, freshman Nicole
Tritter (Toronto, Ontario) took a pass from junior Alicia Ramolla
(Barrie, Ontario) to knot the score at one all. The power play goal came at the
9:47 point in the period. Ramolla picked up her third point of the weekend
when she scored 12:02 into the second stanza to give UConn the 2-1 lead.
Credited with assists on the play were freshman Kristen Russell (Dauphin,
Manitoba) and sophomore Jaclyn Hawkins (Manotick, Ontario). However,
Providence was able to connect for one more goal that period to tie the game at
two all heading into the last 20 minutes. The ice was quiet for the first 10
minutes of the third stanza before Erin Normore was able to get the puck around
senior Kaitlyn Shain (Calgary, Alberta) and score the winning goal for
the Friars at the 11:16 point. Providence added two more in the remaining
minutes of play to close out the victory. For the game, Providence out-shot
UConn, 43-28. UConn was 1-for-4 on the power play while Providence went 1-for-3
with an extra skater on the ice. Shain had 38 saves while taking the loss for
the Huskies and Jana Bugden had 26 saves and the win for Providence. |
