Women's Hockey Helps Host Hockey East's Skating Strides Against Breast
Cancer Day
On January 27, 2007, as UConn defeated Northeastern, 4-1,
the Hockey East Association held its first annual Skating Strides Against Breast
Cancer Day with an event at each of the home sites for league games. Today’s
event in Storrs alone helped raise $4,000 for breast cancer research. The funds
will be donated to the American Cancer Society and Mel’s Foundation. Today, both
sets of Huskies donned commemorative pink warm-up jerseys for pregame and,
during the game itself, many players used with pink composite sticks courtesy of
league sponsor TPS Hockey. Autographed jerseys and sticks were raffled off after
the game as both teams took part in an autograph session for fans. Patrons also
donated to breast cancer research at the door and hung pink skates in the
Freitas Ice Forum lobby with their name on it to show their support of the
event. Some photos from the event are below:

Members of the UConn hockey team raised $3,400 in the
days leading up to the game from their friends and family and presented a
commemorative check before the game. The full team posed with the check in the
locker room before warmups and, later, UConn's seniors and captains presented it
on the ice. In addition to the $3,400, another $600 was raised on-site on game
day.
