STORRS, Conn. (January 24, 2008) - The University of
Connecticut women's ice hockey team will join the Hockey East
Association and fellow Hockey East women's ice hockey programs in
the "WHEA Skating Strides Against Breast Cancer" to take place the
weekend of Feb. 16-17. The Huskies will host their part of the event
on Saturday, Feb. 16 as they host Boston University at 1:00 p.m.
In addition to gate admissions, each of the
contests will also include merchandise sales, raffles, auctions, and
other special events. All proceeds from the Skating Strides weekend
will be donated to breast cancer charities, including the Friends of
Mel Foundation, the American Cancer Society and Susan G. Komen for
the Cure.
As a part of the league-wide event, the teams will don commemorative
pink jerseys and will play with pink composite sticks courtesy of
league sponsor TPS Hockey.
The women's games schedule for this weekend's
special event include the following: Saturday - Boston College
at Maine; Boston University at Connecticut; Providence at
Northeastern; Vermont at New Hampshire. Sunday- Connecticut at
Boston University; Northeastern at Providence.
The Huskies hope to have continued success in raising an abundance
of money for the cause as they did so a year ago. Last season the UConn women's ice hockey team collected
$4,000, the most
money collected by the eight teams that participate in the league.
In addition to the women's league collecting money, during the month of February all 10 of the Hockey East
men’s teams will also contribute with special “50-50 Raffles”,
“Chuck-a-Puck” promotions and other fundraising events held in
conjunction with their games.
