Binning's Power-Play Goal Propels Women's Ice Hockey to 5-2 Victory at
Minnesota State-Mankato

Manakto, Minn. (Oct. 3, 2008) – Two
members of the University of Connecticut women’s ice hockey team
(2-0) scored twice in a 5-2 victory over Minnesota State-Mankato
(0-1) on Friday night at the All Seasons Arena. Amy Hollstein
(Pembroke, Mass.) and Michelle Binning (Oshawa, Ont.) each
scored twice for the Huskies in their second game of the season.
Binning’s first goal of the game with five minutes
remaining in the second period tied the game (2-2) and her power-play goal at
18:17 in the same period gave UConn a lead it would not relinquish (3-2).

The Huskies trailed initially after Kala Buganski struck
first for Minnesota State (MSU) just 4:47 into the game. With four skaters to a
side, Hollstein tied it up (1-1) just past the midway point of the first period.
A mere 15 seconds later, Kathleen Rosso regained the one-goal (2-1) lead for the
home team with a goal at 10:18.
With a pair of goals from Binning, the Huskies tied the
game and then captured the lead in the second period.
UConn continued to maintain pressure in the third period
and capitalized on its ninth power play of the night at 13:19 with Dominique
Thibault (L’Original, Ont.) putting her fourth goal of the season past Paige
Thunder. Hollstein scored an empty netter before time expired in the final 20
minutes (19:47) with Cristin Allen (Pickering, Ont.) recording her second
assist of the night.
Between the pipes, Brittany Wilson (Nepean, Ont.)
made 29 saves for the Huskies including 12 and 10 in the first and second
periods, respectively.
Mavericks had the edge in shots (33-21), but the Huskies
capitalized on two of their nine power-play opportunities en route to the 5-2
road victory.
The series continues with a 4 p.m. Eastern Standard Time
match-up against the Mavericks on Saturday at All Seasons Arena.

- Going into tomorrow afternoon’s game the Huskies are now 3-2-2
against the Mavericks in the all-time series.
- Michelle Binning has recorded two power-play goals this season,
matching her total last year.
- Tonight’s game winner was Binning’s second of her career, after scoring
a game-winning goal in the 2006-07 season.
- With two goals tonight, Amy Hollstein has matched her season-high
mark of two goals in a single game twice. Hollstein also struck twice against
Sacred Heart on Sept. 27.
