Women's Ice Hockey Hosts Two ECAC Opponents This Weekend
STORRS, Conn. (Oct. 10, 2008) – The
University of Connecticut women’s ice hockey team (2-1-0) returns to
action at Mark Edward Freitas Ice Form for a pair of contests this
weekend. On Friday night, the Huskies take on the Colgate Raiders
(1-0-0) at 7 p.m. followed by a Saturday afternoon game against St.
Lawrence (0-0-0) at 4 p.m.
The Huskies split a two-game series at Minnesota
State-Mankato (MSU) last weekend, taking the first game 5-2. Michelle Binning
(Oshawa, Ont./Toronto Jr. Aeros Int. AA) scored her first goal of the season
to give UConn a 3-2 lead with under 20 minutes remaining in the game. The
power-play goal was the first of two for the Huskies as Dominique Thibault
(L’Original, Ont./ Montreal Axion NWHL) scored to make it a 4-2 game with seven
minutes left. Amy Hollstein (Pembroke Mass./Lawrence Academy) added an
empty netter as the time expired for the 5-2 UConn win.
Despite scoring first in the second game of the series, the
Huskies dropped a 4-2 decision to MSU on Oct. 4. Sami Evelyn (Nepean,
Ont./Toronto Jr. Aeros. Inter. AA) scored the first goal of her collegiate
career, as well as the first of the game. Thibault added another early in the
third period, but it was not enough as MSU’s goalie made 30 saves in the game.
The Huskies lost 4-2 in their third game of the season.
UConn faces two members of the ECAC this weekend, first
with Friday night’s game against Colgate. The Huskies have earned wins in both
meetings against the Raiders after first facing off in 2006. UConn claimed a 2-1
victory over Colgate last season and look to continue its success over the
Raiders in a front of a home crowd at 7 p.m.
The Raiders overcame a two-goal deficit in their first game
of the season to win 4-3 against Syracuse. Tri-captain Sam Hunt scored to put
Colgate ahead 3-2 and Hannah Milan added the eventual game winner halfway
through the third period.
On Saturday, UConn will take on No. 6 St. Lawrence at 4
p.m. The Huskies won last year’s meeting 3-2 at St. Lawrence when the Saints
were ranked third in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll. UConn has
yet to defeat. St. Lawrence in its home rink and have always faced the Saints
while they are ranked. This weekend marks the first competition for St. Lawrence
opens the season as the team opens the year against another Hockey East
opponent, Providence on Friday.
UConn is 24-33-4 against the 12 members of the ECAC, having
faced off against 10 of the 12 teams in the past eight seasons. The Huskies were
once a member of the ECAC, finishing with a 7-12-2 record in conference play
during the 2001-02 season prior to joining the Hockey East the following year.
