Huskies Suffer First Loss of Season To Towson, 12-9
STORRS, Conn. (March 19, 2005) – Becky Trumbo scored eight goals as
the 14th-ranked Towson women’s lacrosse team knocked the University of Connecticut
from the ranks of the undefeated in a 12-9 Tiger win at the George J.
Sherman Family-Sports Complex in Storrs.
UConn, which saw four different players score a pair of goals in the
game, dips to 4-1 on the year
while Towson ups its mark to 5-0.
Jacqui Hamilton opened the scoring for the Huskies just 57 seconds
into a back-and-forth first half which saw each team net five goals.
Goals by Trumbo and Erin Cayer gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead at the 5:18
mark, but Kristen Link and Tracy Mullaney would soon tally to put
UConn back up, 3-2, at the 18 minute mark. Trumbo scored twice in the
next 1:16 to put Towson back up 4-3. Hamilton netted her second goal
of the half on a free position shot to tie the contest back up at 4-4.
Trumbo and Tanya Kotowicz would score for Towson and UConn,
respectively, before half time to knot the score at five goals apiece.
The Tigers roared out of the gates in the second half, netting the
first five goals to take a 10-5 advantage. Shannon Witzel struck twice
in the run while Towson also got a goal from Cayer and two more from
Trumbo. Showing the mettle that enabled them to overcome a 7-3 second
half deficit at California a week prior, UConn would score four goals
over a 2:52 span to cut the Tiger lead to just a single goal at 10-9
with 6:10 to play in the game. Shannon Burke had a pair of the goals
in this stretch, including a free position tally. Link recorded her
second goal of the contest while Mullaney capped the rally with an
unassisted goal of her own. Trumbo would score twice in the final five
minutes though as the Tigers hung on for the 12-9 win.
Jennifer Wong and Kristen Haldeman both saw time in the UConn net with
Wong making six saves and allowing eight goals, while Haldeman yielded
four goals and stopped one shot. Mandy Corry went the distance in the
Tiger cage, making 10 saves with nine goals against. Helping the
Tigers maintain their advantage in the game was a 32-21 edge over
UConn in shots, along with a 27-16 margin in ground balls.
UConn returns to action on Wednesday, March 23 when the Huskies play
host to Harvard at 3:00 p.m. at the Sherman-Family Sports Complex.
