UConn Rolls Past Rutgers, 11-5
BOX SCORE
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 10, 2005) – Jennifer Wong made 14 saves to
lead the University of Connecticut women’s lacrosse team to a historic
11-5 win over Rutgers at the Scarlet Knights' Yurcak Field on Sunday
afternoon. With the win, UConn improves to 8-3 overall and 3-1 in BIG
EAST play, securing the school’s first ever winning season in
conference action. UConn can claim at least share of the conference
championship with a win on April 23 at Georgetown. UConn’s best
previous finish in the BIG EAST was an even 3-3 record in 2002. The
Scarlet Knights dip to 4-7 overall and 1-3 in league games with the
loss. The game also marked UConn’s first ever win at Rutgers.
The Huskies opened the game on a 4-0 run over the first 15:16. Jacqui
Hamilton tallied twice in the run, part of a hat trick for the senior.
Kristen Link also scored, as did Tracy Mullaney who went on to pick up
her school-record tying 28th career hat trick. Shannon Burke also
turned in a three-point day for UConn as she had a goal and two
assists, the first of which came on Link’s strike during the
game-opening run that established UConn’s dominance from the opening
draw. Kate Shomo tallied twice for Rutgers to trim the Scarlet
Knights’ deficit to 4-2, but Hamilton and Burke scored unassisted
before half time to put UConn up 6-2.
The second half saw more Husky dominance. Katie Batiuk scored the
second stanza’s opening goal at 29:01, but five of the next seven
scores would be by UConn. Two of the goals came from Mullaney while
two more were scored by Dana Stewart. Tammy Michel added the game’s
final goal, accounting for the 11-5 final, UConn’s largest margin of
victory ever over Rutgers.
Keeping the Scarlet Knights from mounting a comeback was steady play
by the Husky defense. Wong’s 14 saves tied her season high while the
five goals allowed tied her season low for a game in which she played
the full 60 minutes. It is the fewest goals that RU has ever scored in
its eight games against the Huskies. The defense was further bolstered
by Clare Schwan. Making her first start of the season, Schwan
responded with a pair of ground balls and three caused turnovers.
UConn will return to action on Saturday, April 16, when the Huskies
play host to Holy Cross at 1:00 p.m.
