Tracy Mullaney Named All-American

STORRS, Conn. (May 24, 2005) – Senior Tracy Mullaney (Cockeysville, Md.) has been named to the All-America third team by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association. She becomes the second Husky to ever garner All-America recognition, joining Pam Lowie, who was named to the IWLCA’s third team in 2002.

In addition to the national recognition, Mullaney and sophomore Shannon Burke (Camillus, N.Y.) both earned IWLCA North Regional All-America honors with Mullaney making the first team and Burke the second.

A unanimous All-BIG EAST selection, Mullaney assaulted the UConn record book in 2005. She broke the previous school benchmark of 55 points with her 61 this year. Meanwhile, Mullaney’s 46 goals rank second-best for a single season in UConn lore. Mullaney also led UConn with 30 caused turnovers to accompany her 36 draw controls which were also a team-high and included a school record tying seven against Yale on April 27. During the 2005 season, Mullaney became the first Husky to ever eclipse the 200-career point plateau, finishing her stellar career with 203, and also broke Lowie’s career goal record, finishing with 154. A two-way midfielder, in 2005 Mullaney became the second player in BIG EAST history to be named the conference’s Player of the Week on both offense and defense in the same year. Mullaney is the only Husky to ever be named All-BIG EAST in each of her four years.

Burke led UConn with 19 assists in 2005 and ranked second to only Mullaney with her 37 goals and 56 points. Her 38 ground balls were also second only to Mullaney. Burke’s 19 assists, which included a career-high four in UConn’s ECAC Championship Game win over Boston College, represent the second best seasonal total in Husky history. Only the second UConn sophomore to be named All-BIG EAST (Mullaney was the first), Burke was the league’s fourth-leading scorer in 2005 and ranked third in assists. Burke stands third in UConn history with 30 career assists, seventh with 92 points and ninth with 61 career goals.

Additionally, Mullaney and senior defender Kelly Robinson (Horseheads, N.Y.) have been selected for the prestigious North-South All Star Game, to be held on Saturday, June 4, in Baltimore.

Additionally, seven Huskies will compete for the New England team in the US Lacrosse National Tournament to be held this weekend at Lehigh University. The seven participants are Leah Giffin, Kristen Haldeman, Kristina Harvey, Tanya Kotowicz, Tammy Michel, Laura Trzasko and Emily Van Buitenen. One interesting opportunity for the group will be seeing their head coach, Bonnie Rosen, in action. Rosen will compete for the US Team at the festival as part of the final round of tryouts for this summer’s World Cup team. Rosen played on Team USA’s 1997 and 2001 World Cup squads.

These Huskies all helped lead their team to its finest season ever. UConn posted a 12-5 record in 2005, setting a new school benchmark for both wins and winning percentage. The Huskies received their second-ever postseason berth and first title, capturing the ECAC Championship with a rousing 14-7 victory over Boston College on May 14 at Morrone Stadium in Storrs. UConn also set school highs in 2005 for the most consecutive weeks ranked in the IWLCA poll (five) and the highest ever ranking (No. 15 on April 25).
