NEW HAVEN, Conn. (March 1, 2006) - Lauren Taylor’s goal with 33 seconds
left in the second overtime thwarted the Huskies’ four-goal comeback as the
University of Connecticut women’s lacrosse team fell to Yale, 6-5, Wednesday
afternoon at Johnson Field. Abbey VanDeusen (Fayetteville, N.Y.) led the
charge for the Huskies (0-1) with two goals, including one down the stretch,
while goalie Kristen Haldeman made eight key saves, but it was not enough
to overtake the Bulldogs (1-0) and their early lead.
After winning the
opening draw, UConn controlled play in its offensive half for much of the first
five minutes of action, but were unable to find the back of the net. Yale
brought the ball back downfield following a turnover and rattled off three goals
in the ensuing three minutes of play to pull ahead 3-0 with just over 20 minutes
to play. Taylor’s second goal of the game off a free position shot at 13:35
brought the lead to four before VanDeusen connected on a free position attempt
of her own to pull within three.
Yale scored once
more before the half to send the teams into intermission with a 5-1 score, but
the Huskies came out firing in the second period. Kristin Link
(Slingerlands, N.Y.) started the comeback at 12:46 and Whitney Michele
(East Rochester, N.Y.), VanDeusen and Shannon Burke (Camillus, N.Y.) each
added one over the course of the next two-plus minutes to even out the ledger
with 10:09 to play.
Both teams buckled
down on defense for the remainder of regulation, limiting the offensive chances
for the opposition. Haldeman came up with six of her eight saves in the second
stanza, while her counterpart Ellen Cameron came up with five and 13 on the day.
UConn had several scoring opportunities in the extra periods, including a free
position attempt in the second overtime, but was unable to convert.
Despite the loss,
Burke extended her goal-scoring streak to 23 games with her tally against the
Bulldogs, while Link pushed hers to seven consecutive matches.
The Huskies will
return to action in sunny Orlando, Fla. on Mar. 7 as they take on Temple at 3:00
