LAKE BUENA
VISTA, Fla. (March 7, 2006) – Senior Abbey VanDeusen (Fayetteville,
N.Y.) scored the fourth hat trick of her career and senior goalie Kristen
Haldeman (Malvern, Pa.) tallied 11 saves, but the University of Connecticut
women’s lacrosse team fell to Temple, 11-10, Tuesday afternoon. With the loss,
the Huskies fall to 0-2 on the season, while the Owls improve to 1-3.
Temple pulled out
to an early 3-0 lead before VanDeusen opened scoring for the Huskies at the
17:24 mark with a free position goal. Whitney Michele (E. Rochester,
N.Y.) followed suit, converting on a pass from Shannon Burke (Camillus,
N.Y.) before Janet Williams (Reisterstown, Md.) tied it up off an assist
from Bonnie Levin Rose Valley, Pa.) with just under 13 minutes to play in
the half.
Williams scored
again off a free position shot to give UConn the lead, but Temple came back
quickly with a goal from Casey Cech, who finished the day with two tallies. With
the score four-all, VanDeusen and Kristin Link (Slingerlands, N.Y.) each
fired off unassisted tallies to give the Huskies their largest lead of the game
with 6:31 remaining in the period. A Temple goal at the 2:29 mark cut down the
lead, but UConn still went into halftime with the 6-5 lead.
Following the
intermission, the Owls rattled off two quick goals to gain the lead, but UConn
was not deterred. Laura Trzasko (Plainsboro, N.J.) hit a free position
shot and VanDeusen added her third goal of the contest to pull the Huskies ahead
for the final time at 8-7 with 22:06 to play. Temple regained the lead at 16:19
off a goal from Patty Glavin and would not relinquish it, despite goals from
Link and Burke down the stretch.
Trzasko and Cea
Fong (Greenwich, Conn.) were strong defensively, limited the Owls’ leading
scorer, Allison Frengs, to just one goal on the day.
The Huskies
continue their six-game road swing Saturday at Towson. UConn will take on the
Tigers at 7:00 p.m. in Johnny Unitas Stadium.
