BALTIMORE, Md. (March 15, 2008) - Katy Ryan (Hamburg, N.Y.) tied the
school record for single-game goals with seven as the University of Connecticut
women's lacrosse team lost to Loyola Saturday afternoon at Diane Geppi-Aikens
Field. This is the fifth straight loss for the Huskies, dropping their record to
0-5 on the year and 0-1 in the BIG EAST (Loyola is an associate member of the
conference in women's lacrosse). The Greyhounds are now 3-5 overall and 1-2 in
the conference.
Ryan's seven-goal performance ties Pam Lowie's scoring output against George
Mason on March 24, 2001.
Kim McGinty (Huntington, N.Y.) added four goals,
while Whitney Michele (East Rochester, N.Y.) also had a multi-goal game
with two tallies and an additional three assists. Michele currently leads the
Huskies in points with 10 goals and 11 assists.
The Greyhounds jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but three consecutive free position
goals for UConn, including two from Ryan, gave the Huskies the lead at 3-2 with
19:14 to go in the first half. Loyola then scored six of the next seven goals to
pull ahead 8-4 at the 9:11 mark. Ryan closed out scoring in the first half off
an assist from Katie Devaney (Fayetteville, N.Y.) to cut the margin to
8-5 as the teams headed into halftime.
UConn opened the second half with a 3-0 run, bolstered by two more goals from
Ryan and one from McGinty tie the game at 8-8 with
27:00 to play. Greyhound player Cara Fillippelli broke the tie at 26:31
and the two teams swapped goals over the next 12 minutes, keeping the margin to
within two for much of the stretch.
Bridget O'Keefe started a 3-0 scoring spree for Loyola, however, that stretched
its lead to 16-11 with 12:37 to play. The Huskies would pull back within three,
16-13, but four straight goals for Loyola all but sealed the deal by the 2:55
mark with the score 20-13.
The combined 36 goals between the two teams is a BIG EAST record, eclipsing 33
by Georgetown (23) and Boston College (10) on April 14, 2002.
The Huskies return to action Wednesday, Mar. 19 against Harvard at 4:00 p.m. in
Cambridge, Mass. Harvard is 3-1 this season with a game against Quinnipiac
schedule for Sunday. |
