STORRS, Conn. (April 2, 2008) - The University of Connecticut women's
lacrosse team led by as much as five in the second half, but a late charge by
Fairfield gave the Stags a 18-13 win Wednesday afternoon at the George J.
Sherman Family-Sports Complex. The loss drops UConn's record to 1-10 on the
year, while Fairfield improves to 8-1 overall.
Kristen Coleman scored seven goals for the Stags, including five in the second
half during the 11-1 run that gave Fairfield the win. Whitney Michele
(East Rochester, N.Y.) paced the Huskies with four goals on the day, while
Robyn Pastuch (Merrick, N.Y.) and Katy Ryan (Hamburg, N.Y.) each
added two. With 13 goals this season, Pastuch has already bypassed her career
goal total from her first three years (12) combined.
UConn fell behind 5-3 in the first half, but Ryan started a 5-1 scoring spree
for the Huskies that put them on top 8-6 with 1:10 to play in the opening
period. Ashley Mitchelides (Hudson, Ohio) scored the go-ahead goal at
3:18 off an assist from Michele to give UConn a lead it would not relinquish
until midway through the second half.
The Huskies opened the second period ahead 9-7 and rattled off the first three
goals to stretch their lead to 12-7, the largest of the day. Coleman found
the back of the net at 17:28, however, with the first of her four goals scored
within the ensuing three-plus minutes. Erin Rigby added two more for the Stags
and they quickly jumped ahead 15-12 with 5:38 to play.
Michele attempted to start a comeback at the 4:50 mark by scoring off an assist
from Kim McGinty (Huntington, N.Y.) to bring the game to within two at
15-13, but Fairfield rattled off three goals down the stretch to secure the
18-13 win.
UConn is now 5-3 all-time against Fairfield.
The Huskies return to action Sunday against Rutgers at noon in the Sherman
