UConn Places Tenth At Head Of The Genesse

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Oct. 7, 2007) – The Varsity Eight boat of the University of Connecticut women’s rowing team competed on Sunday at the Head of the Genesee Regatta.

The format for this regatta is slightly different than traditional events -- having a three-mile head style race in the morning, followed by a dual 1500-meter race in the afternoon. Final standings were calculated by taking the three-mile time and adding it to the 1500 meter time times three.

UConn came in tenth overall out of 35 crews.  In the head piece, UConn came in 11th and in the afternoon, it faced Pennsylvania in the 1500 meter dual and the huskies crossed the lane with a slight lead over Penn. That performance moved them from 11th place to tenth in the overall standings.

"This was a really fun race to take part in,” said UConn head coach Jennifer Sanford-Wendry. “I love that we had an opportunity to do some sprint racing in the afternoon.  We were a little disappointed with our morning performance, but coming out there in the afternoon and fighting head to head with Penn was a really positive experience.  It was also great to see such strong competition, racing teams like Cornell, Radcliffe, Buffalo, and Syracuse.  It shows us what kind of speed is out there and will motivate us to work harder. "

Rowing for UConn's Varsity Eight was freshman Molly Reister (Buffalo, N.Y.), senior Olga Solovyova (New London, Conn.), sophomore Sarah Willhoft (Manchester, Conn.), junior Kathy Les (South Windsor, Conn.), sophomore Theresa Nolan (Atlantic City, N.J.), sophomore Kelly Murphy (Marietta, Ga.), senior Allyson Zoppa (East Hartford, Conn.), senior Monica Parker (Glastonbury, Conn.) and junior Heather Gates (Monmouth Beach, N.J.).

UConn next competes at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta in Philadelphia on October 27.
