UConn Takes On Buffalo, Colgate and Eastern Michigan
BUFFALO, N.Y. (April 19, 2008) – The
UConn rowing team had a successful day of racing on Saturday against
Colgate, Buffalo and Eastern Michigan.
The varsity eight raced Colgate in the
morning and won in a time of 6:37.0 to 6:45.9. In the afternoon race,
UConn had a very close race with Buffalo, losing by 2.6 seconds.
Buffalo raced at 6:33.61 with UConn at 6:35.98. Last weekend, the UConn
varsity eight finished 10 seconds behind Buffalo in the finals of the
Knecht Cup. The Huskies gained a lot of speed in practice this week and
the goal was to close the gap, which is exactly what the boat did.
UConn will see Buffalo one more time in two weeks at the Dad Vail
Regatta.The UConn varsity eight was Katie Beasley
(Centerville, Mass.), junior Kathy Les (South Windsor, Conn.), senior
Olga Solovyova (New London, Conn.), freshman Gretchen Stern
(Rexford, N.Y.), sophomore Sarah Willhoft (Manchester, Conn.), senior
Monica Parker (Glastonbury, Conn.), sophomore Katie Rauscher
(Manchester, Conn.), sophomore Rebecca Likar (East Lyme, Conn.) and
junior Heather Gates (Monmouth Beach, N.J.).
The second varsity eight defeated the
Buffalo lightweights in the morning with a time of 7:06.65 to Buffalo's
7:22.14. In the afternoon, they raced the Buffalo second varsity eight
and lost 6:36.98 to 6:52.48.
That boat was freshman Mollie Riester (Buffalo,
N.Y.), senior Allyson Zoppa (East Hartford, Conn.), sophomore
Kristen Beasley (Centerville, Mass.), freshman Audrey Squire (Kinnelon,
N.J.), sophomore Jennifer Reynolds (South Hero, Vt.), senior
Maddie Bey (South Windsor, Conn.), sophomore Lizzie Dargie
(Waterford, Conn.), sophomore Mikey Sevick (Simsbury, Conn.) and
junior Stephanie Bryant (Natick, Mass.).
The novice eight raced Buffalo only and
lost a close one. Buffalo raced at 7:04.97, UConn was 7:09.41. That boat
was sophomore freshman Julie Tibbetts (East Lyme, Conn.),
freshman Efmorfia Efthimiou (Stonington, Conn.), freshman Kim
Weber (Ridgefield, Conn.), sophomore Margaret Hoagland (Chaplin,
Conn.), sophomore Lizzie Littlewood (Mystic, Conn.), freshman
Amanda Cote (Wakefield, R.I.), freshman Brittany Weiss (New
Milford, Conn.), sophomore Jackie Ortuso (Somerset, N.J.) and freshman Robin Calhoun (Evanston, Ill.).
The varsity four also raced Buffalo only
with Buffalo winning 7:36.51 to 7:47.55. That boat was sophomore Leah
Masopust (Morris, Conn.), sophomore Hayley Percy (Woodbridge,
Conn.), sophomore Charissse Laughery (Columbia, Conn.), junior
Julie Konstantino (Orange, Conn.) and sophomore Liz Harsley
(Riverdale, N.J.).
UConn's novice four A raced Buffalo with a
time of 7:59.3 Buffalo won with a time of 7:46.72. That boat was
freshman Hailey Rosa (Mansfield, Conn.), freshman Brittany
Weiss (New Milford, Conn.), freshman Brittany Koether
(Orange, Conn.), freshman Brittany Schramm (White Bear Lake,
Minn.) and freshman Taylor Pence (Vienna, Va.).
UConn's novice four B lost to Colgate in the
morning. Colgate won in 7:58.7 and UConn was 8:29.2. In the second
race, UConn lost to Eastern Michigan as Eastern Michigan clocked in at
8:19.72 and UConn was 8:23.0.That boat was
sophomore Sofia Medina (Hartford,
Conn.), sophomore Ally Cote (Granby, Conn.), sophomore
Manouchka Sanon (Ramapo, N.Y.), sophomore Sylvia Czupi
(Woodbridge, Conn.) and sophomore Lynn Dusault (Somerset, N.J.).
UConn will next race in Oak Ridge, Tenn. at
the BIG EAST Championship next weekend.
