Second Varsity Eight Wins Title As Rowing Opens At Head Of The Riverfront
HARTFORD,
Conn. (Sept. 5, 2008) ---
The University of Connecticut women’s rowing team opened its fall
season on Sunday at the Head of the Riverfront Regatta and the
Huskies were led by its second varsity eight boat which finished
first in its race.
The second varsity
eight won their race in a time of 17:57.01 and were followed by Army
(18:51.05), Trinity (18:54.3), Mount Holyoke (19:02.84) and Smith College
(19:26). Members of that boat for UConn were junior Katelyn Donovan
(Sherman, Conn.), sophomore Taylor Hoige (Baldwinsville, N.Y.),
junior Kristen Beasley (Centerville, Mass.), sophomore Morfia
Efthimiou (Stonington, Conn.), junior Lizzie Littlewood (Mystic,
Conn.), junior Julie Konstantino (Orange, Conn.), junior Liz
Harsley (Riverdale, N.Y.), junior Charisse Laughery (Columbia,
Conn) and sophomore Amanda Cote (Wakefield, R.I.).
The first varsity eight (pictured above) came in second place to 2008 NCAA Division III
champion Trinity in an 11 boat race. Trinity won this event with a time of
16:55.7 while UConn was second with 17:32.31 followed by the Coast Guard at
17:37.32. Rowing for UConn was junior Leah Masopust (Morris, Conn.),
sophomore Gretchen Stern (Rexford, N.Y.), sophomore Kim Weber
(Ridgefield, Conn.), senior Kathy Les (South Windsor, Conn.), junior
Sarah Willhoft (Manchester, Conn.), sophomore Audrey Squire (Kinnelon,
N.J.), junior Katie Rauscher (Manchester, Conn.), junior Rebecca
Likar (East Lyme) and Diana Filipek.
The novice four placed fourth out of six crews. Trinity A won, followed by
Fairfield and Trinity B. UConn came in ahead of Army and Rensselear with a
time of 22:02.6. Rowing for UConn was Sara Trevisani, Liz Nissen,
Meredith Kaiser, Kylie Angell and Dana Haddad.
In the open four event, UConn entered three boats and placed fourth, tenth
and 11th out of 16 crews. Trinity won with a time of 19:31.96. UConn A
(20:04.08) consisted of Masopust, Stern, Weber, Les and Rauscher. UConn B
(21:00.84) included Trevisani, Likar, junior Sylvia Czupi
(Woodbridge, Conn.), sophomore Brittany Weiss (New Milford, Conn.)
and Amanda Sibley. UConn C (21:25.71) included sophomore Brittany
Koether (Orange, Conn.), junior Mikey Sevick (Simsbury, Conn.),
sophomore Taylor Pence (Vienna, Va.), junior Jackie Ortuso
(Somerset, N.J.) and sophomore Hailey Rosa (Mansfield, Conn.).
UConn next races at the Head of the Housatonic in Shelton, Conn., on
Saturday, Oct. 11. |
