STORRS, Conn. (Nov. 14) - The University of Connecticut women's soccer
team, lead by junior Jennifer Sullivan's two goals, defeated Colgate
by a score of 4-0 on Sunday afternoon at Morrone Stadium. With the
win, the Huskies advance to the Third Round of the NCAA Tournament for
the 18th time in school history. UConn is now 18-6-1 overall while
Colgate fell to 14-6-1.
The first half was ticking away without a score until freshman
Karyn Riviere (Guilford, Conn.) scored at 39:29 to put UConn up
1-0. Off a cross by senior forward Kristen Graczyk
(Albuquerque, N.M.), Riviere shot the ball into the upper right corner
of the net to give the Huskies a one-goal lead going into halftime.
The goal was Riviere's fifth of the season, with Graczyk tallying her
team-high 10th assist of the year. In the first 45 minutes, UConn
out-shot Colgate 11-4.
The Connecticut offense came out attacking in the second half, and
Jennifer Sullivan (Stonington, Conn.) quickly gave the Huskies a
2-0 lead at 46:50. From 29 yards out, Sullivan, who was bringing up
the ball, stopped and blasted a shot over Raider keeper Luisa Miller
for her first goal of the season.
Just over seven minutes later at the 54:00 mark, Sullivan fired the
ball in for her second goal of the game to push the UConn lead to 3-0.
Off a pass by junior defender Karlyn Miselis (Glastonbury,
Conn.), Sullivan scored on another long shot, this time from 21 yards
out. The assist was Miselis' third of the season.
Senior defender Zahra Jalalian (Auburn, Wash.) scored the
fourth and final UConn goal of the game just 59 seconds later. Riviere
shot the ball towards the net, and Jalalian deflected it over Miller
to increase the score to 4-0, where it would remain final. The goal
was Jalalian's second of the season, while Riviere collected her
fourth helper.
In the second half, UConn registered nine shots to Colgate's three.
For the game the Huskies had a 20-7 advantage in shots. Junior keeper
Megan Jessee (Orefield, Pa.) stopped the lone Raider shot on
goal for the shutout. Colgate had four corner kicks while allowing
just one to the Huskies. The game marked the first time since Oct. 8
in which neither Graczyk nor Jessica Gjertsen (Stony Plain,
Alberta) scored a goal in a UConn victory.
The University of Connecticut women's soccer team will next travel to
South Bend, Ind., to face BIG EAST rival and No. 4 seed Notre Dame on
Saturday, Nov. 20, at 7:00 p.m. Just one week ago, the
Huskies topped the Fighting Irish 2-1 at Morrone Stadium for the BIG
EAST Championship title.
