Women's Soccer Players Schnur And Yi Named Soccer Buzz All-Americans; Five
Others Recognized With Postseason Awards
NEW YORK, N.Y. (December 14, 2006)
— University of Connecticut women’s soccer players Meghan Schnur
(Butler, Pa.) and Annie Yi (Indianapolis, Ind.) continue to
reel in postseason awards as the duo were both selected as Soccer
Buzz All-Americans as announced Thursday by the publication.
Schnur,
a junior midfielder, earned Soccer Buzz Second Team All-American plaudits after
a season in which she paced the Husky offense with 18 points on seven goals and
four assists. Her 18 points and seven goals ranked among the top 10 in the BIG
EAST, while her 11 points in conference play was good for ninth in the league.
This award marks just one of the many postseason awards earned by Schnur. She
was also selected as a member of the All-BIG EAST First Team, while also
capturing BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year accolades. Schnur was also honored as
an NEWISA All-New England First Team selection, a Soccer Buzz All-Region First
Team honoree, a member of the NSCAA/Adidas All-Northeast Region First Team, an
NSCAA/Adidas College Women Scholar All-East Region First Team selection and was
named to the NSCAA/Adidas College Women Scholar All-America Team. In
recognition of that honor, Schnur is invited to join fellow All-Americas from
the youth, high school and college ranks to be honored during the All-America
Awards Luncheon at the Indianapolis Marroitt on Saturday, January 13th, 2007.
A
midfielder who started all 22 games in which she
appeared as a true freshman, Yi was named to the Soccer Buzz All-Freshman Fourth
Team following a rookie season in which she tallied nine points on three goals
and three assists. She began her Husky career in style as she set a career-high
with four points in UConn's season-opening, 4-0, win over Hofstra. In that
game, Yi scored the game-winning goal and added a pair of assists. She also
scored the game-winning goal as the Huskies defeated Providence, 4-0, midway
through September. For her efforts on the pitch, Yi was also named to the
All-BIG EAST Third Team and the Soccer Buzz Northeast Region All-Freshman Team.
Sophomore Elizabeth Eng (Chicago, Ill.) was also recognized with three
postseason awards of her own after a season in which she provided the Husky
offense with a balanced attack, scoring four goals and dishing out four
assists. She scored a pair of game-winning goals in UConn’s 2-1 win at Central
Connecticut and 2-0 win against Syracuse. At the conclusion of the season, Eng
was selected to the All-BIG EAST Second Team and was named to the NEWISA All-New
England Second Team. She rounded out her postseason awards by earning Soccer
Buzz All-Region First Team accolades.
Fellow sophomore Stephanie
Labbe (Stony Plain, Alberta) was a fourth member of the team that earned
postseason awards. Labbe made 21 consecutive starts in goal and finished the
season with 10 wins and a mere 0.96 goals against average and was named to the
NEWISA All-New England Second Team. During the course of the season, Labbe
notched four shutouts and posted a scoreless streak of 461:43 minutes over a
six-game span. She was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the week Oct. 16 after
posting a pair of shutouts, including a blanking of top-ranked Notre Dame to
hold the Irish scoreless for the first time since the 2004 season.
A third
sophomore to find herself with multiple postseason awards is forward/defender
Brittany Taylor (Campbell Hall, N.Y.). Taylor opened the season at forward
and finished her 2006 campaign with 16 points on seven goals and two helpers.
Taylor netted a pair of first half goals in early September in a heartbreaking
3-2 loss to second-ranked and eventual national champion North Carolina. She
was the only player this season to have scored two goals on the UNC defense, and
the 2-0 deficit she handed the Tar Heels was the first time North Carolina had
trailed by two goals at halftime since the 1999 season. She followed that the
next day by scoring the game-winning goal in UConn’s 2-1 win over then
10th-ranked Duke. Midway through the season she made the switch to defense and
helped anchor a Husky backline that allowed just two goals over their last seven
regular season games, including a five-game stretch in which the defense allowed
zero goals. Taylor was selected to the All-BIG EAST First Team, the Soccer Buzz
All-Region First Team, the NSCAA/Adidas All-Northeast Region First Team and the
NEWISA All-New England Second Team at the conclusion of the season.
A forward who started in all 22
games this season, sophomore Brittany Tegeler (Baldwin, Md.) was named to
the NEWISA All-New England Second Team following a season in which she collected
17 points on five goals and seven assists. She was named the National Player of
the Week Oct. 23 after scoring the lone goal Oct. 20 as the Huskies snapped
sixth-ranked West Virginia’s 15-game home unbeaten streak with a 1-0 win at Dick
Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Tegeler’s goal helped the Huskies become the first team
to hand No. 6 West Virginia its first home loss of the 2006 season with her goal
in the 61st minute. She also became the first player to solve the Mountaineer
defense in the month of October as West Virginia hadn’t allowed a goal in a 5-0
month. She followed that performance by tying a career-high with five points
Oct. 22 at Pittsburgh in the final game of the regular season. With the Huskies
trailing 2-1 midway through the second half, Tegeler netted the game-tying goal
for her fourth goal of the season. She struck again less than 10 minutes later
to give UConn the lead for good with her fourth goal in her last five games.
She wasn’t done yet, however, as she picked up an assist on UConn’s final goal
of the afternoon to provide the Huskies with some insurance over the final 12
minutes of the game.
Rounding out the Huskies post season awards to this point, freshman Lauren
Ebert (Hillsborough, N.J.) was selected to the Soccer Buzz Northeast Region
All-Freshman Team. Ebert, a mainstay on the Husky back line, saw action in 18
games and ended the season with three points on a goal and an assist. She
scored her first career goal in thrilling fashion as she tied the score at one
goal apiece in the Huskies' second round game of the NCAA Women's College Cup
against top-seeded Texas.
