Soccer Buzz Magazine Honors Schnur and Taylor as Women's Soccer All-Americans and Richards as Freshman All-American

STORRS, Conn. (December 27, 2007) - University of Connecticut women's soccer players Meghan Schnur (Butler, Pa.) and Brittany Taylor (Campbell Hall, N.Y.) were named to the All-America first team recently by Soccer Buzz magazine. This follows being named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-America first team earlier in the month. Kacey Richards (Williamstown, N.J.) was named to the Freshman All-America third team. In addition, Schnur was named the Northeast region player of the year by Soccer Buzz.

Schnur finished her senior season as the team's leading scorer with five goals and nine assists for 24 points. Her 28 career assists rank ninth on the all-time Husky career list. In addition to her now multiple All-American honors, she also was named to the  NSCAA Scholar All-America first team for the second year in a row, as well as being honored as the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year, as well as earning ALL-BIG EAST first team honors for the fourth time.

A junior, Taylor was the leader of the Husky backline, with the task of guarding the opposing team's best offensive player. With her leading the way, the Huskies recorded shutouts against top 10 teams West Virginia (Oct. 14) and Stanford (Nov. 23). She was also honored as the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year as well as earning her third straight appearance on the All-BIG EAST first team. She also had her third appearance on the NSCAA All-Northeast Region team, as in addition to first team honors this year, she took first team honors as a sophomore in 2006 and second team honors as a freshman in 2005.

Richards stepped in and became a regular contributor as a freshman in 2007. She started 21 out of the 22 games in the Husky midfield, the most of any rookie. She was the leading scorer among the freshman, finishing sixth overall with nine points on two goals and five assists. Richards had previously been named to the All-BIG EAST third team.

The magazine also honored several other Huskies. Joining Schnur and Taylor on the All-Northeast Region first team were forward Elizabeth Eng (Chicago, Ill.) and goalkeeper Stephanie Labbe (Stony Plain, Alberta). Forward Karyn Riviere (Guilford, Conn.) was named to the second team, Richards was named to the third team and joining Richards on the All-Northeast Region Freshman team was midfielder Becky Gundling (Farmington, Conn.).

Eng had a strong year offensively, finishing second on the team with six goals. She recorded her first career hat trick against Pittsburgh (Oct. 12). She also scored the game winning goal in the Huskies' 1-0 win over Wake Forest in the NCAA second round on November 18. She had already been honored this season with a spot on the ALL-BIG EAST second team, as well as a spot on the NCAA All-Northeast Region second team and the NEWISA All-New England first team.

A junior, Labbe played every minute in net for the Huskies, recording a 0.61 goals against average, with 71 saves and a .835 goals against average. She recorded 11 shutouts in 22 games, while earning All-BIG EAST honorable mention. She also was previously named to the NSCAA All-Northeast Region first team and the NEWISA All-New England first team.

Riviere concluded her Husky career with five goals and two assists this season, while splitting time between playing forward and defense. Her 12 points put her fifth on the team. She had previously been named to the NEWISA All-New England second team.

Gundling started 19 of the 21 games she appeared in as a true freshman and helped solidify the Husky midline. She also added a goal and two assists this season. She had previously been named to the NEWISA All-New England second team.

The 2007 Connecticut Huskies concluded this season 14-6-2. They advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the first time since 2003. Their final NSCAA national ranking of ninth is also the highest since they finished second in 2003.
