Bleachers On East Side Of Morrone Stadium Removed; Will Be Replaced With Updated Set

STORRS, Conn. (August 15, 2008) – In its continuing efforts to provide the best possible soccer game day experience for its fans, the University of Connecticut has removed the existing east side bleachers (across from the press box) at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium and will erect an updated set of bleachers in the same area.

“Our top priority at our athletic venues is the safety and welfare of our student-athletes, coaches and fans," says UConn Director of Athletics Jeffrey Hathaway.  "After a recent evaluation of our facilities, we discovered some deficiencies with the existing east side bleachers at Morrone Stadium.  The decision was made to remove the existing bleachers, build a new stone foundation and then install a new seating configuration on the east side of the stadium. We thank our loyal Husky fans for their continuing support and apologize for any inconvenience."

While a permanent solution is evaluated, the temporary set of bleachers will be in place at the stadium for the 2008 season and will be installed following the completion of the new foundation. The exact installation date of the temporary bleachers will be determined by Tuesday, Sept. 2. These bleachers will include accessible seating for patrons with disabilities, along with added safety features.

The UConn women’s soccer team plays an exhibition game against Boston College this Sunday, Aug. 17 at 1:00 p.m. and then opens the regular season on Monday, Aug. 25 against Central Connecticut at 7:00 p.m.

The Husky men’s soccer team plays a home exhibition game Saturday, Aug. 23 against Hofstra at 7:00 p.m. and the regular season opener is Friday, Aug. 29 against St. Peters at 7:00 p.m.
