UConn Falls In Home Opener To Central Connecticut, 2-1
Box Score
STORRS, Conn. (August 25, 2008)– The University of
Connecticut women’s soccer team lost its first match of the year to Central
Connecticut, 2-1 in a night game at Morrone Stadium Monday. The Huskies fell behind
in the first 15 minutes of the game and were never able to recover.
All of the offense came in the first half of the game.
Central Connecticut (1-0-1) struck first at 13:56 when Clio Tregear tapped in a pass
from Rachel Caneen. The game stayed at 1-0 in favor of CCSU until the 30th
minute when the Blue Devils struck again. Brittany Emin sent a shot across to
Tregear who once again put the ball in the net for her second goal of the year
giving CCSU a 2-0 lead.
UConn (0-1) struck back a little more than a minute later.
Freshman Karen Gurnon (Tolland, Conn.) sent a pass over the top to
sophomore Elise Fugowski (Stolkholm, N.J.) who sent the ball flying into
the bottom right corner of the net for her first goal of the season. The assist
was the first of Gurnon’s collegiate career.
That was as close as the Huskies got despite controlling
the ball for most of the second half. The second half also brought on a slew of
opportunities for UConn to tie or take the lead. In the 50th minute
of the game senior Elizabeth Eng (Chicago, Ill.) had a one-on-one
opportunity to score but the CCSU goalie Erin Herd kicked the shot away at the last
second. A minute later, junior Lauren Ebert (Hillsborough, N.J.)
attempted a header that just missed the left corner of the goal. But the Huskies
were unable to capitalize and fell just short of the win.
UConn returns to action August 29 at 7:30 p.m. against Hofstra in their
first game of the Penn State tournament.
