LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (October 3, 2008) – The
University of Connecticut women’s soccer team played to a 1-1 tie in Louisville
Friday. The Huskies took the lead early but Louisville (4-4-2, 2-1-1 BIG EAST)
was able to come back towards the end of the second half to push the UConn
record to 3-6-3, 1-1-2 BIG EAST.
Senior Elizabeth Eng (Chicago, Ill.) scored first
for the Huskies during the 18th minute of play at 17:30. This was the
first goal of the year for Eng on her 29th shot of the year. The
first shot Eng fired a minute earlier was saved by the Louisville goalie Katie
Zoeller. But seizing another opportunity, Eng sailed the ball past the goalie
from 12 yards out on the left side.
The Cardinals tried to fight back during the first half but
were unable to get anything by senior Stephanie Labbe (Stony Plain,
Alberta) even though they took eight shots in the first half alone. Labbe
finished the game with eight saves, tied for second most saves she has made in a
game this year.
During the second half, the two teams fought hard back and
forth. Louisville tried to tie up the game taking eight more shots during the
second half and one of them managed to sneak by Labbe during the 68th
minute. At 67:21, Lindsay Boling scored her sixth goal of the year to tie up the
game and force overtime.
Despite some offense by Louisville, the game finished tied
at one-all after two overtime periods.
UConn is back in action in the concluding game of their
road trip at Cincinnati on Sunday, Oct. 5 at 1:00 p.m. The game will be
broadcast live on WHUS.
