CINCINNATI, Ohio (October 5, 2008) –
Despite a late second half
comeback attempt, the University of Connecticut women’s soccer team fell to
Cincinnati 2-1 in Cincinnati. The Bearcats (6-5-1, 2-2-1 BIG EAST) scored at the
very end of the first half and once again during the second half to give them a
2-0 lead. UConn (3-7-3, 1-2-2 BIG EAST) cut that lead in half with 15 minutes
remaining but was unable score again giving them their second BIG EAST loss.
The
first half started out in UConn’s favor. Both senior Elizabeth Eng
(Chicago, Ill.) and junior Annie Yi (Indianapolis, Ind.) had a few
attempts at the goal during the first half. In the thirteenth minute of the
game, Eng had a chance to put the Huskies up but the ball sailed wide left.
Later in the half, Yi and Eng combined for two shots in less than a minute to
try and put UConn up but each time they were unable.
Cincinnati scored the first of their two goals at the end of a very busy first
half. The Cincy goal was scored on a penalty kick at the 44:13 minute marker by
Melissa Bigg. UConn received a foul call that resulted in Cincinnati taking a
penalty kick. Bigg scored her third goal of the season and put the Bearcats up
by one going into halftime.
UConn
came out firing in the second half with freshman Jessica Shufelt
(Rochester, N.Y.) taking a shot that flew high of the goal. A few minutes later,
Eng took her third shot of the game, but the Cincy goalie Andrea Kaminski was
able to get a hold of it.
A
little bit more than a minute after the Eng shot, the Bearcats took the ball
down the field and scored at 58:23. Brittany Hansen put Cincinnati up by two
with her first goal of the season.
UConn
finally was able to get the ball past the goalie during the 76th
minute of play on the fifth UConn shot of the day. Senior Brittany
Tegeler (Baldwin, Md.) had her shot blow by Kaminski with some help from Eng.
The goal was the first of the year for Tegeler and Eng recorded her first assist
of the season. But UConn was unable to score again during the remainder of the
game falling to 1-2-2 in the BIG EAST, 3-7-3 overall.
The
Huskies are back in action next Friday, Oct. 10 at Pittsburgh at 7:00 p.m.
