INDIANOLA, Pa. (October 10, 2008) – The University
of Connecticut women’s soccer team, lead by Brittany Tegeler’s two goals downed
Pitt at Founder’s Field Friday, 2-1. Tegeler scored a career-high tying two
goals on the night for the Huskies pushing them past the Panthers and into a
2-2-2 BIG EAST record.
Pittsburgh (4-10, 1-5 BIG EAST) got off to a quick start
when they scored at 9:05 in the first half. On their second corner of the game
Jennifer Kritch sent a pass to Liz Carroll who just barely got it by senior
goalie Stephanie Labbe (Stony Plain, Alberta).
UConn (4-7-3, 2-2-2 BIG EAST) tied the game up at one a
piece 20 minutes later at 29:08. Senior Liz Eng (Chicago, Ill.) got the ball up
the field by dribbling around all of the Pittsburgh defenders. Eng then took a
shot on goal that was just barely saved by the Pitt goalie Morie Kephart. The
deflection by Kephart allowed senior Brittany Tegeler (Baldwin, Md.) to score
her second goal of the year, both coming in the last two games.
UConn took the 1-1 tie into halftime. The first half
yielded even results for both teams with both UConn and Pitt take four shots
each, each goalie also made two saves for the opponents.
The evenness of the game stopped during the second half as
UConn controlled the majority of play. The Huskies took 10 shots during the
second half, overpowering the Panthers three.
The Huskies went ahead of Pitt during the 52nd
minute of play. Tegeler scored her second goal of the game at 51:30. With some
help from redshirt freshman Courtney Wilkinson-Maitland (Candiac, Quebec),
Tegeler took a shot from the left side blasting the ball into the lower right
corner of the game.
Tegeler continued her domination for the Huskies as less
than a minute later she took another shot at the goal but the ball just grazed
the crossbar and bounced back into play.
After a yellow card right outside of the box during the 75th
minute of play, Tegeler had a chance for the hat trick when she took the free
kick from about 20 yards out. The ball sailed high though just passing over the
crossbar.
But UConn didn’t need any more offense and easily went on
to win the game against Pitt.
The Huskies are back in action on ESPNU Sunday, Oct. 12 at
2:00 p.m. The Huskies will be taking on West Virginia in Morgantown.
