TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (March 7, 2006) –
Florida State University swept a softball doubleheader from the
University of Connecticut on Tuesday by scores of 8-2 and 1-0. UConn’s
record drops to 2-5 on the season while Florida State improves to
13-8.
In the second game, Florida State pitcher Kayla Collins
pitched a complete-game four-hitter as the Seminoles scored the game’s only run
in the bottom of the first inning. Natasha Jacob led off the FSU first with a
homerun.
UConn sophomore Allie Gendron (Amherst, Mass.) had a
pair of doubles in that contest – in the fourth with two outs and in the sixth
with one out – but the Huskies could not advance her.
Husky junior Krista Michalczyk (Salem, N.H.) went
the distance in the loss to drop to 1-2 on the season. She scattered four hits
as she struck out three and walked three.
In the opener, Florida State’s Jacob again led off the FSU
first with a homer. The Seminoles then exploded for three runs in the third
inning to take a commanding 4-0 lead. Jacob led that inning off with a triple
and then advanced home on an error.
UConn senior Michelle Caouette (Wyantskill, N.Y.)
took the loss for the Huskies as she pitched two innings and gave up four runs
on six hits. Sophomore Ashley Thody (Middletown, Conn.) was on the hill
for the other four innings of work for UConn. She scattered nine hits while
giving up six runs while striking out one.
The Huskies scored their only two runs of the doubleheader
in the fourth inning on an RBI double by freshman Jillian Ortega
(Aberdeen, N.J.), who later scored on an RBI single by senior Kim Castner
(Forked River, N.J.).
UConn returns to action on Wednesday when the Huskies visit Florida
A&M for a 3:00 p.m. game.
