begins the northern portion of its schedule Thursday when it makes the short

the Huskies remained in Tallahassee to play a couple of doubleheaders. They fell
twice to Florida State 2-1 on March 11 with both Seminole wins coming with a run
scored in the bottom of the seventh inning. UConn won the last time they took
the field, sweeping a doubleheader with Florida A&M March 12, winning game one
by a score of 7-0 and game two by a score of 8-0 in five innings. Two freshmen
have led the Huskies in hitting so far this year. Right fielder Melissa Lucas
(Methuen, Mass.) currently holds the team's "triple crown", as she currently
leads in batting average (.404), home runs (three) and RBI (nine). Second
baseman Julianne Towers (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) is second on UConn with a
.357 batting average. She also has seven runs scored and seven RBI on the year.
Quinnipiac is 7-13 after the southern portion of their schedule. They started
7-5 but have lost their last eight games. The Bobcats dropped five games last
weekend (March 14-16) at the Florida Atlantic Tournament. Their leading hitter
through 20 games is senior outfielder Jill Vigilone. She is hitting .298 with
three runs scored and four RBI. Senior Carolyn Schmolz is the team’s top
pitcher, she has a 3-3 record with a 3.80 ERA in eight starts. UConn holds an
11-2 lead in the all-time series, but Quinnipiac won the last meeting 6-3 last
season in Storrs. The Huskies have their home opener on Wednesday, March 26
when they host Sacred Heart for a doubleheader starting at 2:30 p.m.
