HAMDEN,
Conn. (March 20, 2008) –
The University of Connecticut softball team defeated
Quinnipiac 9-0 on Thursday. The game ended after five innings due to the eight
run mercy rule. Micah Truax (South Glen Falls, N.Y.) hit the 20th
home run of her career in the top of the fifth inning. That ties her with
Andrea D’Innocenzo and Karin Muller for first on the UConn career
list.
With the
win, UConn improves to 8-10 overall, while the Bobcats fall to 7-14.
The
Huskies got on the board in the top of the second when Sarah Neuschwander
(Chugiak, Alaska) singled home Melissa Lucas (Methuen, Mass.) to put them
up 1-0. In the bottom of the inning with a runner on third and one out,
Meghan Tierney (Salem, Conn.) snagged a sharp liner that was traveling down
the third base line, tagged out the runner and then threw the ball to first base
to complete the double play.
In the
top of the fourth, Neuschwander singled home Lucas to give UConn a 2-0 lead. The
next batter Justyne Roy (North Dighton, Mass.) doubled to score
Jillian Ortega (Aberdeen, N.J.). After Neuschwander scored on a wild pitch,
Connecticut made it 5-0 when Allie Gendron (Belchertown, Mass.) doubled
home Roy.
UConn
finished the game early with another four run inning in the top of the fifth.
Danielle Del Ponte (Tewksbury, Mass.) hit her second home run of the year to
give the Huskies a 7-0 lead. A Roy walk then set the stage for Truax’s record
tying home run.
For the
game, Neuschwander, Truax and Gendron were each 2-for-3. Tricia Sullivan
(New Bedford, Mass.) was solid on the mound, pitching all five innings, giving
up only one hit while striking out six. It was her fourth shutout of the season
and second in a row.
The
Huskies will host Sacred Heart in a doubleheader for their home opener on
Wednesday, March 26. The first game is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at the
Connecticut Softball Field.
