STORRS, Conn. (March 26, 2008) - The University of Connecticut softball team opened their home season Wednesday with a doubleheader sweep of Sacred Heart. The Huskies won game one 2-0, and then won the nightcap 10-2 in five innings. UConn improves to 10-10 on the season, while the Pioneers fall to 6-13.

In game one, the Huskies scored their two runs in the third inning. Freshman Melissa Lucas (Methuen, Mass.) continued her strong start to her UConn career by singling home Micah Truax (South Glen Falls, N.Y.) and Allie Gendron (Belchertown, Mass.).

Those two runs proved to be all Connecticut needed as Rachael Crossin (Fairless Hills, Pa.) pitched a complete game two hitter, striking out nine. It was the fourth shutout in a row for the Huskies and gave them 24 straight innings without allowing a run.

The scoreless streak ended when Sacred Heart scored in the top of the first of game two. However, UConn answered with five runs in the bottom of the second. The Huskies sent 10 men to the plate during the inning, as Kristina Tolles (Southington, Conn.) Justyne Roy (North Dighton, Mass.), Julie Towers (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) and Lucas each had RBIs during the inning.

UConn added five more runs in the bottom of the fourth. The big hit came off the bat of Sarah Neuschwander (Chugiak, Alaska). She hit a two-run home run to give the Huskies a 10-1 lead. The Pioneers scored one run in the top of the fifth, but with runners on second and third and one out, Tolles got the next two batters to fly out to centerfield, and the game ended due to the eight run mercy rule.

The Huskies begin BIG EAST play this weekend when they travel to Providence for a doubleheader on Saturday. Game time is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
