2008) - The University of Connecticut softball team defeated Central
Connecticut 9-1 in six innings on Thursday. In the bottom of the third, junior
Micah Truax (South Glen Falls, N.Y.) hit a two-run home run, which was
the 21st of her career. That sets a new school record, breaking the tie she had
with Andrea D'Innocenzo and Karin Muller. With the win, the
Huskies improve to 12-12 on the season. The Blue Devils fall to 6-10. UConn
took control right out of the gates, scoring three runs in the bottom of the
first. Sarah Neuschwander (Chugiak, Alaska) singled down the left field
line to bring in two runs. Truax followed two batters later with a single that
brought home Justyne Roy (North Dighton, Mass.). After Truax's historic
blast over the left field wall in the third, Jillian Ortega (Aberdeen,
N.J.) hit a two-run shot of her own in the bottom of the fourth, her fourth
homer of the year. She now has 14 career home runs, which ranks her fifth on the
Husky career list. UConn was able to finish the game off in the bottom of the
sixth when Danielle Del Ponte (Tewksbury, Mass.) hit a solo shot over the
right field wall to make the score 9-1 and end it due to the eight run mercy
rule. For the game Truax was 2-for-3 with three RBI. Del Ponte was 2-for-3
with two RBI and two runs scored. Rachael Crossin (Fairless Hills, Pa.)
pitched five innings for the win, giving up five hits and striking out seven.
The Huskies return to BIG EAST action this weekend. They travel to Pittsburgh
for a doubleheader Saturday starting at 11:00 a.m. They then will move onto
