BOSTON, Mass. (April 10, 2008) –
The University of Connecticut
softball team fell 5-1 to Boston University in non-conference action Thursday.
UConn falls to 15-15 overall, while the Terriers improve to 21-12.
The
Terriers scored the first two runs of the game in the bottom of the second when
they were able to load the bases with two outs. Molly Gallagher then dribbled a
hit to towards second base that squirted between Jillian Ortega
(Aberdeen, N.J.) and Jessica Arremony (Griswold, Conn.). Since the
runners were on the move on the play, two runs were able to score.
UConn
thought they had gotten on the board in the top of the fourth when Sarah
Neuschwander (Chugiak, Alaska) doubled home Justyne Roy (North
Dighton, Mass.), who had scored all the way from first. However, on appeal it
was ruled that Roy missed third base and was called out. The Terriers then added
two runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-0 lead.
The
Huskies scored their run on the top of the fifth. Micah Truax (South Glen
Falls, N.Y.) reached on an error by the Boston shortstop. She then advanced to
second on a passed ball, and stole third when the Terriers forgot to cover the
base after recording an out. With two outs, Meghan Tierney (Salem, Conn.)
hit a ground ball to the third baseman that was misplayed, which allowed Truax
to score. Boston added one run in the bottom of the sixth to complete the
scoring.
Six
different Huskies led the team with one hit each. Rachael Crossin
(Fairless Hills, Pa.) took the loss, pitching four and one third innings, giving
up two earned runs and striking out six.
Connecticut returns to BIG EAST action when they host St.
John’s for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 12. First pitch is scheduled for
12:00 p.m. at Connecticut Softball Field.
