Micah Truax Win BIG EAST Player of the Year for Second Straight Season
BIG EAST Release LOUISVILLE, Ky. (May 7, 2008) -
University of Connecticut softball junior Micah Truax (South Glen Falls,
N.Y.) was named BIG EAST Player of the Year for the second straight season at
the postseason banquet held Wednesday night in Louisville. She is only the
fourth player in BIG EAST history to win consecutive player awards. The
Huskies also had three players named to the All-BIG EAST first team. Joining
Truax on the team was junior shortstop Jillian Ortega (Aberdeen, N.J) and
senior designated player Allie Gendron (Belchertown, Mass.). UConn tied
DePaul with the most players on the BIG EAST first team. Truax led the league
with a .508 conference batting average. She also had four home runs, 12 RBI and
15 runs scored. She also led the league with an .891 slugging percentage, while
leading the team to a 13-7 conference record and a third place finish, UConn's
highest BIG EAST finish since 2001. Truax was named BIG EAST Player of the Week
twice this season and became the Huskies all-time home run leader on April 3.
This is also her second appearance on the All-BIG EAST first team. Ortega is
making her second straight appearance on the first team. Her conference
statistics included a .344 batting average, one home run, 10 RBI and 13 runs
scored. She was able to improve on her statistics despite making a position
switch to shortstop, after playing her first two seasons at third base. In
addition to Ortega's two first team appearances, she was named to the second
team as a freshman in 2006. After being named to the All-BIG EAST second team
the last two seasons, Gendron makes her first appearance on the first team in
her final season. She had a .321 batting average with one home run and eight RBI
with 10 runs scored in conference games.
The University of Connecticut softball team has earned the third seed in the
upcoming BIG EAST tournament May 8-10 in Louisville, Ky. They will face sixth
seeded Syracuse in the quarterfinals on Thursday, May 8 at 10:00 a.m. |
