Gendron and Del Ponte Named to BIG EAST Softball All-Tournament Team
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (May 10, 2008) - Following the conclusion of
the BIG EAST softball tournament Saturday, the conference announced
that Allie Gendron (Belchertown, Mass.) and Danielle Del
Ponte (Tewksbury, Mass.) had been named to the All-Tournament
team. Gendron had a strong finish to her Husky career in the
tournament. In two games, she went 5-for-8 with three RBI and two runs scored.
She hit two home runs in the tournament, after having hit only one throughout
the regular season. In the bottom of the seventh inning of the quarterfinal game
against Syracuse Thursday, Gendron hit the single that tied the game at five and
allowed the Huskies to eventually win in nine innings. Del Ponte hit .500 in
the tournament, going 4-for-8. She also had four RBI and one run scored. Her big
blow was a three-run home run hit against Syracuse in the bottom of the third
Thursday. After defeating Connecticut in the semifinals Friday, DePaul won the
BIG EAST tournament with a 4-1 victory over USF on Saturday. Blue Demon pitcher
Becca Heteniak was named the tournament's most outstanding player. UConn
reached the BIG EAST semifinals for the first time since 2001 and its 28 wins
was the most since that same campaign. |
