PITTSBURGH, Pa. (April 5, 2008) - The University of Connecticut softball
team split its doubleheader with Pittsburgh Saturday, winning game one 8-3
before falling 1-0 in the night cap. UConn is now 13-13 on the season and 2-2 in
the BIG EAST. The Panthers are now 18-13 and 4-2.
In game one, the Huskies struck first with three runs in the top of the
second. With the bases loaded and two out, Jillian Ortega (Aberdeen,
N.J.) tripled to left field scoring all three runs. Sarah Neuschwander
(Chugiak, Alaska) added two more in the top of the third with her third home run
of the season which gives her the team RBI lead at 16. The score remained that
way until the top of the seventh when Julie Towers (Goodlettsville,
Tenn.) singled to start off the inning. Justyne Roy (North Dighton,
Mass.) sent them both home with her first home run of the season. Later in the
inning, Allie Gendron (Belchertown, Mass.) doubled home Micah Truax
(South Glen Falls, N.Y.) to make it 8-0. The Panthers added three runs in
the bottom of the seventh to make the final score 8-3. Truax finished the game
as the top Husky hitter, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Tricia Sullivan
(New Bedford, Mass.) was solid on the mound, pitching all seven innings,
giving up three runs on eight hits while striking out nine. In game two,
Rachael Crossin (Fairless Hills, Pa.) pitched a fantastic game, going six
innings while giving up three hits and striking out nine. She only gave up one
run, on a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the first inning. Unfortunately for
the Huskies, Pittsburgh pitcher Kayla Zinger was even better, as she pitched her
first career no-hitter. She only gave up one walk to Meghan Tierney
(Salem, Conn.). The Huskies return to action on Sunday when they travel to
Syracuse for a doubleheader. The first game is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. |
