EAST MEADOW, N.Y. (February 17, 2006) – The University of Connecticut
swimming and diving teams wrapped up the third day of competition at the BIG
EAST Championships with the men’s team in seventh place (191.5) and the women’s
team in sixth place (209).
Several members of the men’s team qualified for their final
events on Friday evening. Michael Brocki (Westhampton, N.Y.) started
things off finishing 14th in the 200 freestyle with a time of
1:41.48. Chris Ferreira (Madison, Conn.) put forth yet another
performance for the Huskies this time with a 12th place finish in the
100 backstroke (51.44). In the 100 breaststroke Tristan Jones (Wanniassa,
Australia) and Nick Acquavito (Freeport, N.Y.) both swam the finals with
Jones capturing a sixth place finish (55.80) and Acquavito a 15th
place finish (57.49). Sean Hannan (Clifton Park, N.Y.) made his first
finals appearance of the meet in the 100 butterfly where he placed 14th
with a time of 50.62. In the 400 IM Mike McNulty (Hartland, Wis.) secured
an 11th place finish for UConn. Ferreira, Jones and McNulty were
joined by Abed Kaaki (Ras Tarura, Saudi Arabia) in the 400 medley relay
where they finished in seventh place (3:25.77).
Danielle Sanders (Mississauga, Ontario) and Emily
Karel (Bethesda, Md.) both made appearances in the finals of the women’s 200
freestyle. Sanders performance was good for a ninth place (1:51.76) while Karel
finished in 16th (1:54.44). The 100 backstroke saw three Huskies in
the finals with Ryan Smith (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) finishing in fifth place,
Lisa Shelps (Quakertown, Pa.) in 11th place and Erin
McLaughlin (Woodbridge, Conn.) in 16th place. Bridget Regan’s
(Bensalem, Pa.) time of 4:30.04 secured her a seventh place finish in the 400
IM. The 400 medley relay team consisting of Kristalynn Kempton (Glen
Head, N.Y.), Diane Duncheskie (Oreland, Pa.), Karel and Smith produced an
eighth place finish with a time of 3:52.76.
Allison Coleman (New Canaan, Conn.) had yet another
strong performance finishing fourth in the three meter dive. Teammates Lauren
Jacob (Elmira, N.Y.) and Liza Marianni (Cherry Hill, N.J.) also
competed in the event with Jacob finishing in ninth and Marianni in 11th.
Competition at the BIG EAST Championships will wrap up tomorrow at the Nassau
Aquatics Center. The preliminaries are scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. and the
finals slated for 6:30 p.m. |
