Coleman and Bransfield Take Home BIG EAST Accolades on Final Day of Swimming and Diving Championships

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. (February 18, 2006) – Sophomore Allison Coleman (New Canaan, Conn.) and diving head coach John Bransfield were recognized for their achievements this season by being named Co-Outstanding Diver of the Year and Women’s Diving Coach of the Year, respectively. This announcement came on the final day of competition at the 2006 BIG EAST Championships.

The men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams wrapped up competition Saturday evening at the Nassau Aquatics Center with the men finishing the meet in seventh place with 272.5 points and the women capturing sixth place with a total of 315 points.

Lisa Shelps (Quakertown, Pa.) opened the night for the Huskies placing 13th in the finals of the women’s 100 freestyle (52.19). Danielle Sanders (Mississauga, Ontario) and Sarah Kearns (Milford, Mass.) had a back-to-back finish in the 1650 freestyle with Sanders securing fourth place (16:54.98) and Kearns fifth place (16:57.70). Ryan Smith (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) posted a second place finish and an NCAA B cut time of 2:00.62 in the 200 backstroke. Audrey Prior (Lutz, Fla.) also competed in the event finishing 13th (2:05.87). Kristalynn Kempton’s (Glen Head, N.Y.) time of 2:19.46 in the 200 breaststroke was good for a ninth place finish. In the 200 butterfly, UConn had two representatives in Katie DeVinney (Avondale, Ariz.) and Bridget Regan (Bensalem, Pa.). DeVinney would finish the event in fifth place (2:02.38) while Regan would place 14th (2:06.36). The 400 freestyle relay team captured sixth place for UConn with a time of 3:28.08.

Mike McNulty (Hartland, Wis.) would finish his final event of the meet, the 200 backstroke, in 15th place (1:52.56). Three Huskies posted ninth place finishes in their finals with Tristan Jones (Wanniassa, Australia) in the 100 freestyle (45.64), Nick Acquavito (Freeport, N.Y.) in the 200 breaststroke (2:04.92) and Adrian Astiz (Bethesda, Md.) in the 200 butterfly (1:50.92). The 400 freestyle relay team touched the wall in 3:01.84 good for fifth place. The divers tallied strong performances again this time in the three meter event. T.J. Ferguson (Plainville, Conn.) finished in seventh place (450.95) while teammates Kevin Thompson (Stamford, Conn.) finished in eighth place (416) and Michael Clifford (West Islip, N.Y.) in 16th place.
