Men's and Women's Swimming And Diving Enjoy Successful 2007-08 Season
2008-09 Team Captains Are Announced
STORRS, Conn. (May 8, 2008) -- The 2007-08 season for the University
of Connecticut men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams was a remarkable one
and one of the finest in recent years.
The Husky women posted a 7-3 team dual meet record while
the UConn men posted an impressive 8–1 mark. Both squads won the Husky
Invitational at home in October, the Terrapin Cup at Maryland in November and
posted a strong showing at the U.S Short Course Nationals during December in
Atlanta. In addition, both teams finished fifth at the BIG EAST Championship.
In terms of NCAA competition, the teams had three divers
represent the Huskies at the NCAA Zone Diving meet in March. UConn was
represented by senior Courtney Haney (Mesa, Ariz.) at the NCAA Women’s
Swimming Championship, competing in both the 100 and 200 yard breaststroke
events.
Senior Allison Coleman (New Canaan, Conn.) was named
as the BIG EAST Conference Diver of the Year for the second time in her career,
freshman Alex Davidson (Pointe-Claire, Quebec, Canada) swam at the
Canadian Olympic Trials in Montreal and sophomore Jon Wong (Toronto,
Ont.) swam at the World Short Course Championships in Manchester, England during
March.
With a training trip in the Bahamas for the swimmers and
Hawaii for the divers, it was a fitting way to build up to a season that saw 15 school
records broken at least once and six swimmers post NCAA “B” cuts.
This spring, both Haney and Coleman were named UConn Club
Outstanding Senior Athletes while Andrea Ryan (Davenport, Iowa) was named
a UConn Club Outstanding Senior Scholar Athlete.
This year, the program has a total of 14 senior swimmers
and three senior divers graduating so the 2008-09 Huskies will certainly have a
new look as they approach next season.
The new captains for the team are juniors Adrian Astiz
(Bethesda, Md.) and junior John Henry Dasinger (Madison, Miss.) for the
men and juniors Katie DeVinney (Avendale, Ariz.), Erin
McLaughlin (Woodbridge, Conn.) and Audrey Prior (Lutz, Fla.)
for the women, as selected by the team.
Along with these new captains,
the coaching staff will welcome a large and talented freshman class. This years’
success and the new wave of young swimmers will add to the excitement of next
year with new team personnel in the pool and new team goals to reach towards. |
