Women's Tennis Loses to Army and LIU

WEST POINT, N.Y. (Feb. 11, 2006) – The University of Connecticut women’s tennis team was shut out, 7-0, by Army on Saturday evening at the U.S. Military Academy’s Lichtenberg Tennis Center in West Point, N.Y. The match came following a 6-1 defeat to Long Island to open the spring season. The Huskies fall to 0-2 on the spring with their opening day losses.

Army started the match, the second of the day for both schools, by sweeping all three doubles matches, with the closest scores being 8-3 margins at both the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Those two numbers were lucky for UConn on Saturday against Army as the Huskies took the Cadets to a super tiebreaker third set at No. 2 and No. 3 singles but lost the remaining matches in straight sets. At No. 2, Jaclyn Shapiro fell by a 3-6, 7-6 (4), 11-9 tally to Kristin Flach, niece of multiple-time Wimbledon Champion Ken Flach. At No. 3, Jessica Porter battled Sarah Giles-Madden throughout at 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 decision won by the West Point plebe.

Against LIU, Cheung and Petruzzi teamed for an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles but the Blackbirds took the top two matches to claim the point. In singles action, Petruzzi was a winner again, topping Amy Hosotsuji, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 5. UConn lost the other five singles matches, although Shapiro and Dibbs battled foes to a supertiebreaker third-set at No. 2 and No. 3 respectively.

The Huskies will return to action on Feb. 18 when they travel to Yale for a 12:30 p.m. match.
