Women's Tennis Edged By West Virginia, 4-2
TAMPA, Fla. (April 18, 2008) - The 11th-seeded University of
Connecticut women's tennis team was defeated by 10th-seeded West
Virginia, 4-2, Friday evening in the consolation round of the BIG
EAST Championships. By virtue of their defeat, the Huskies finished
in 11th place (tied with Georgetown) and have completed championship
competition. Their final record is 9-8. The Mountaineers jumped
out to an early lead, going up 1-0 on UConn after winning the Nos. 1 and 3
doubles matches. The squads then fought for singles points, with WVU winning the
Nos. 1 and 6 matches and UConn taking the Nos. 2 and 5 contests.
Emily Herb (Cherry Hill, N.J.) won her second match of the tournament
in flight two, defeating Monica Lyskawa, 6-4, 6-4, while Ali Campitiello
(Staten Island, N.Y.) bested Stephanie LaFortune, 6-2, 6-4, in flight five.
Mountaineer Natalia Prinz secured the victory for WVU with a 6-2, 6-3 win over
BreAnn Cheung (Tucson, Ariz.) in the No. 3 position.
