Women’s Track and Field Has Successful Outing at Dick Shea Open

WEST POINT, N.Y. (March 26) – The University of Connecticut women’s track and field squad turned in 16 top-three finishes and had two individuals qualify for the NCAA regionals at the Dick Shea Open, hosted by the United States Military Academy. There was no team scoring in the meet.

UConn posted a one-two sweep in the 800-meter dash as Erin Sales (Windsor Locks, Conn.) won the event with a time of 2:22.84 and sophomore Jillian Sullivan (Bristol, Conn.) came in behind her with a time of 2:24.74. Sullivan also had a successful showing in the 1,500-meter run, finishing third with a time of 4:50.45. Sophomore Jennifer Rogers (Parksville, B.C.) took second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.49, freshman Daphne Desrosiers (Danielson, Conn.) was third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.32 and Tamara Highsmith (East Haven, Conn.) finished third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.19 to round out Connecticut’s top track performers of the day.

In the field events, sophomore Daisy VanRavenswaay (Canfield, Ontario) led the Huskies, winning three events, including the shot put with a mark of 14.14m (46-04.75), the javelin with a 41.78m (137-01) throw and the Discus with an NCAA regional qualifying mark of 47.35m (155-04). Deirdre Mullen (Princeton, N.J.) won the high jump with an NCAA regional qualifying mark of 1.84m (6-00.5). Highsmith was the triple jump champion, as well, with a mark of 11.99m (39-04) and took third in the high jump, clearing 1.60m (5-03.00).

UConn swept the top two spots in the long jump with Edwina Clark (Sydney, Australia) winning the event with a 5.60m (18-4.50) jump and Rogers coming in second with a 5.46m (17-11.00) jump. Junior Leah Williams (Brookfield, Conn.) took second in the pole vault, clearing 3.20m (10-06.00) and Lisa Kachmarsky (Monroe, N.Y.) came in behind her in third, clearing 3.04m (9-11.75).

The Huskies next travel to Tampa, Fla., on April 1-2, to compete in the University of South Florida Invitational.
