McMillian Sets New Record in Shot Put With First Place Finish at the Hurricane Invitational

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (March 22, 2008) - Tynisha McMillian (Bridgeport, Conn.) won the shot put with a throw of 15.00m (49-02.50) to mark a new school record and regionally qualify for the NCAA's as she led the University of Connecticut women's track and field team in their 2008 outdoor season opener at the Hurricane Invitational at the Cobb Track and Field Facility in Coral Gables, Fla.

"Tynisha had a great performance today as she started the outdoor season off with a record breaking throw," said head coach Bill Morgan. "We faced some great competition down here this weekend, including some of the top teams in the southern part of the country. This weekend prepared us well for next week's competition and it was a great start to the 2008 outdoor season."

McMillian added a third place finish in the hammer throw with a throw of 49.87 (163-07.00). Fellow field athlete, junior tri-captain Amanda Martin (Rowley, Mass.) finished in second place in the javelin with a throw of 42.58 meters (139-08.00).

Rachael Porter (Watertown, Conn.) earned a third place finish in the high jump was at a jump of 1.69 meters (5-06.50) while freshman Trisha-Ann Hawthrone (Elmsford, N.Y.) finished in third in the 100m dash with a time of 11.72.

Freshman Leah Andrianos (East Syracuse, N.Y.) took a third place finish in the 1500m runs for the Huskies, finishing with a time of 4:48.59.

The Huskies will return to action next weekend, as they travel to Atlanta, Ga. for the Georgia Tech Invitational set for March 28-29. Start time is to be determined.
