Women's Track and Field Looks for
Success at Georgia Tech
STORRS, Conn.
(March 27, 2008)
- The University
of Connecticut women's track and field team will head to Atlanta, Ga. this
weekend for the Georgia Tech Invitational.
"Coming
off the Hurricane Invitational in Miami with mixed reviews, I would expect
enhanced results at Georgia Tech," said head coach Bill Morgan. "This
will be the largest group of athletes traveling out of the region and they're
excited about the opportunity. Whether it's a home meet or a venue cross
country, there's something to be said for the impact of travel - there's nothing
casual about getting in a plane, having a three day time period and performing a
single event. The competition will be of national caliber and as an 'invited'
team, we have a great responsibility in upholding our position."
Senior Tamara Highsmith (East
Haven, Conn.), All-American in the triple jump, will work her specialty this
weekend while fellow All-American Carin Knight (New Rochelle, N.Y.) will
have to sit out due to illness.
Sophomore Tynisha McMillian
(Bridgeport, Conn.) will continue her persuit of nationals after setting a new
school record in the shot put last weekend in Miami. The UConn sprinters will be
led by junior Mandela Graves-Fulgham (Shutesbury, Mass.) in the 400 and
freshman phenom Trisha-Ann
Hawthrone (Elmsford, N.Y.) in the 100 and 200, who are expected to continue
to excel. With the larger travel group size, the Huskies have a few more
athletes who will be able to show their skills and also improve in both the
mid-distance and long distance events.
The Huskies are looking forward to this meet prior to returning back to
Storrs for the UConn Invitational on Saturday, April 5.
