Huskies Dominate at UConn Invitational
Hawthorne Sets New School Record in 200m Dash

STORRS, Conn. (April 5, 2008) - Freshman Trisha-Ann Hawthorne (Elmsford, N.Y.) won both the 100m and 200m dash, while recording a new UConn record in the 200m, as the Huskies won the UConn Invitational on Saturday afternoon in Storrs, Conn.

Hawthorne took first in the 100m dash at 11.58 with a third-best all time finish on the UConn performance list. She also finished in first in the 200m dash with a time of 23.72, a new UConn all-time record.

UConn finished the day with 268.50 points, 140 points ahead of second place finisher, University of Rhode Island. Brown University rounded out the top-three finishers with 80 points.

The Huskies won 14-of-19 scored events in UConn's first home meet of the 2008 outdoor season, while they were able to dominate in the sprint events, led by Hawthorne and junior Mandela Graves-Fulgham (Shutesbury, Mass.).

Graves-Fulgham came in second in the 200m dash and won the 400m dash to continue her successful career as a UConn track athlete. UConn took the top two spots in the 100m dash and hurdles, 200m dash, 400m dash and hurdles, javelin and triple jump. Junior Keelan King (Scotia, N.Y.) finished first in the 800m run with a time of 2:14.96 while Tamara Highsmith (East Haven, Conn.) took first in the high jump and the triple jump. Rachael Porter (Watertown, Conn.) also was victorious in the high jump.

Phylicia George (Markham, Ont.) won the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.21 while she finished second in the 400m hurdles. Kaitlyn Whitlock (Bethel, Conn.) took first in the 400m hurdles for the Huskies as Highsmith added a second place finish in the 100m hurdles and a third place ranking in the 400m hurdles. Both the 1x100m relay and 1x400m relay teams were victorious in UConn's first home meet.

Sophomore Tynisha McMillian (Bridgeport, Conn.) and junior Amanda Martin (Rowley, Mass.) won their respective field events as McMillian won the discuss with a throw of 46.81m (153-07), a personal best for the second-year athlete. She also took third in the hammer throw and won the shot put. Martin won the javelin with a throw of 40.55m (133-00) while teammate Jennifer Aldieri (Middletown, Conn.) finished right behind in second place.

The Huskies will return to action in Knoxville, Tenn. as they compete at the Sea Ray Relays from Friday, April 11 - Saturday, April 12.
