Hawthorne Named To Jamaican Junior National Team
STORRS, Conn. (June 19, 2008) - Freshman Trisha-Ann
Hawthorne (Elmsford, N.Y.) was named to the Jamaican Junior
National team after a successful season with the University of
Connecticut women's track and field program. Hawthorne is among 31
individuals, including 17 female athletes, to be chosen to compete
at the 12th IAAF World Junior Championship in Bydgoszcz, Poland on
July 8-13.
"What
an honor for our program, sprint coach Clive Terrelonge and most
significantly, Trisha Hawthorne, being named to the competitive Jamaican Junior
National Team," said head coach Bill Morgan. "Her progress has been
remarkable with highlights including sweeping the sprint events (100 and 200) at
both the BIG EAST and ECAC Outdoor Championship. " Hawthorne recorded her
personal best marks in the 100 meter and 200 meter dash for the Huskies at the
BIG EAST Outdoor Championship as she won both
events. With her 100 meter winning time of 11.37 she recorded a NCAA qualifying
finish as well as a new UConn program record. In the 200 meter dash, Hawthorne
took first with a time of 23.33, also a new school record in that event.
"To represent your country in any
international competition is the ultimate ending to a long and very successful
season," stated Terrelonge. "For Hawthorne, she will be a great ambassador for
Jamaica and the University of Connecticut."
Terrelonge, himself, was part of the Jamaican
Olympic Team as a two-time Olympian and World Champion for Jamaica.
Hawthorne finished the year at UConn with a
terrific season under her belt, as she competed at her first NCAA Championship
this spring as the Huskies' only individual to perform in two events. |
