Women's Volleyball Announces 2008 Schedule

2008 Schedule

STORRS, Conn. (June 12, 2008) -
University of Connecticut women's volleyball coach Holly Strauss-O'Brien released the team's 2008 schedule on Thursday. The schedule will include two teams from the 2007 Final CSTV/AVCA Division I Coaches' Top 25 Poll along with two teams who received votes for that poll.

The Huskies will open the season at the Northern Illinois University Tournament in Dekalb, Ill. on Friday, Aug. 29 and will face the NU Huskies along with Cleveland State and Chicago State.

UConn will next travel to Albany, N.Y. for the Albany Tournament on Sept. 5-6. The Huskies will take on Wright State, Central Connecticut State University and host, Albany. Last season, UConn defeated in-state rival Central Connecticut 3-0 in a televised match on Cox Sports Television. The following weekend, UConn will head back out to East Lansing, Mich. for the Michigan State Tournament. The Spartans finished the 2007 season ranked 20th in the nation, according to the coaches' top 15 poll and posted an overall record of 21-14. The Huskies will also face Wisconsin-Milwaukee as well as Florida A&M at the Michigan State Tournament as UConn has set a very competitive out of conference schedule.

The Huskies finally return to Storrs, Conn. to host non-conference opponent Fairfield University in a 7:00 p.m. match on Wednesday, Sept. 17. The Fairfield match will begin a six-game home stand for the Huskies with the following weekend of Sept. 19-20 being the UConn Toyota Classic, in which UConn will play host to Cornell, Maine and Temple in Gampel Pavilion.

Finishing out the month of September will be the opening of BIG EAST Conference play, as UConn will host Louisville on Friday, Sept. 26 at 7:00 p.m. and Cincinnati at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 28. Louisville also received votes in the final coaches' poll of 2007.

UConn will begin October on the road, as the Huskies travel to both Syracuse and Marquette for BIG EAST matches during the first weekend of the month. University of Hartford will play in Gampel Pavilion on Wednesday, Oct. 8 in a non-league battle before the Huskies host Rutgers in conference action on Sunday, Oct. 12 at 2:00 p.m. Sacred Heart will make the in-state trip to visit the Huskies in Storrs for a weekday match-up on Oct. 15.

The Huskies will spend two straight weekends on the road, traveling to ranked opponent St. John's on Saturday, Oct. 18 for a 2:00 p.m. BIG EAST battle. St. John's finished the 2007 season ranked 13th on the coaches' poll. The following day, the Huskie will travel to Long Island for a non-conference match before going to both Pittsburgh and West Virginia on Oct. 24 and 26 for BIG EAST matches. UConn will cap off the month of October with a home match against conference opponent Seton Hall on Friday, October 31 at 8:00 p.m.

BIG EAST opponent, Villanova, will come to Storrs on Sunday, Nov. 2 before Georgetown and South Florida travel up north the following weekend for conference matches. The Huskies will honor their senior class prior to the Sunday, Nov. 9 2:00 p.m. match as they wrap-up the year with their last home match of the season. UConn will finish their regular season schedule with a trip to DePaul on Friday, Nov. 14 followed by the last regular season contest match at Notre Dame on Sunday, Nov. 16.

“As we approach our 2008 season, we are continuing to raise the bar for our program," said Strauss-O'Brien. "We have to put together a challenging non-conference schedule that will prepare us for our BIG EAST Conference competition and move us towards the NCAA Tournament."

The 2007 Connecticut Huskies concluded this season 19-11 overall and 8-6 in the BIG EAST. For the second consecutive, year the Huskies made it into postseason play before falling to eventual BIG EAST Tournament Champion St. John's.
