Volleyball Breaks from BIG EAST Action with Non-Conference Match against Hartford on Wednesday

STORRS, Conn. (Oct. 8, 2008) – The University of Connecticut women’s volleyball team (11-6, 2-2) returns to Harry A. Gampel Pavilion on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. non-conference match against Hartford. The Huskies take a break from BIG EAST play after starting off with a 2-2 mark against conference foe this season.

UConn split its second week in conference action, dropping a 3-1 decision at Syracuse on Oct. 3. Despite a season-high kill effort from Lauren Lamberti (Cary, Ill.), the Huskies were unable to overcome a two-set deficit. With 18 kills, Lamberti led both teams, including three other UConn players who reached double figures. Chauntay Mickens (Germantown, Md.) contributed 15 kills while Jordan Kirk (Plano, Texas) and Rebecca Murray (Carmel, Ind.) each had 13.

Mickens led the Huskies with 11 kills in their 3-0 victory over Marquette on Oct. 5. UConn used a balanced scoring attack against the Golden Eagles as six players had five or more kills in the match. Annie Luhrsen (Wheaton, Ill.) contributed a season-high eight kills, finishing the match with .545 hitting-percentage.

Lamberti leads the team with 158 kills and is one of four players to have recorded 155 or more kills this year. Mickens, with a team-best kill average (2.74/s) has totaled 156 kills along with Murray (156). Kirk has registered 157 kills so far during her freshman campaign.

With 636 assists, Luhrsen leads the team and the BIG EAST in assists per game (10.10). She has also recorded a team-best 36 service aces this season, averaging 0.63 per set she is third in the NCAA. As a team, UConn is 18th in the nation with 1.81 aces per set.

Last season, UConn opened the 2007 season with a 3-0 win at Hartford have a 19-3 edge in the all-time series. The Huskies have not lost to the Hawks since Sept. 14, 1991.

The match is set to begin at 7 p.m. with the first 100 fans to receive free chicken fingers.
