SAAC Minutes – October 17, 2004
Erin Howarth (Men’s and Women’s Swimming Assistant Coach) talked
to us about the kinds of things they did in SAAC at Texas. She would like to
start a support system for each team. This would mean that teams would be paired
up and then would be asked to go to each others contests to cheer each other on.
If a team is interested, please contact Eric or Bill so we can get started on
the idea.
Dr. Bruening gave us an update on the different community service
events going on right now. If you are interested in volunteering for the
Catholic Worker House on Oct. 25th or Nov. 18th let her
know.
Kydani Dover talked about an idea that was presented by Boston
Public Schools. She wants to put together a “field trip day”, where 8 to 10
athletes go to Boston and put on a presentation about what it’s like to be an
athlete on the collegiate level. We’re looking at doing a test run in Hartford
on Dec. 3rd, where we would leave mid-morning that Friday and come
back before practices start.
Up-coming event idea: Halloween trick-or-treat with kids on Oct.
31 from 4 – 6 PM. We would dress up with them for the event. (We’ll get more
information to you about this if we decide to do it) We might also be helping
out a Fire Dept. with their Halloween ideas. (Again we’ll get more info to you
if we decide to participate)
Coat-drive: October 23rd. We need teams to help out at
the gates to collect the coats. If you are interested, contact Bill to let him
know.
Food Drive: November 4th and 5th. We will be
collecting food at both of the basketball games. If you are interested in
helping, let Bill know.
Guest Speakers: Courtney Gaine and Nora Descher
They talked a little bit about
graduate school and their advice about it all.
Some advice: Get good grades so
you have the option of going if you want! You’re never set where you are, you
can change, and you have to keep your options open. Don’t go to graduate school
because you can’t get a job. Graduate school is a different type of learning and
style. You can always find ways to pay for graduate school. Never count out
graduate school – it’s a means to get where you’re going. Take advantage of
career services.
Talent Show: Need skit titles or ideas by Wednesday and need music
by Friday. Music needs to be on a CD. The skit needs to be 3 – 5 minutes in
length. The talent show will be Tuesday, October 26th @ 8 PM in
Gampel. It will cost $1 to get in, please remind teams.
If you have any guest speaker ideas, let Ursula know.
Joel has put together some things on the main web-site and is
working on another web-site. The web address is
www.saac.uconn.edu or
www.uconnhuskies.com.
Teams that are competing right now – GOOD LUCK!!!!

luck!!!!
