SAAC Minutes – November 14, 2004
- Ursula discussed how we would be
looking for volunteers to visit the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) in
Hartford. This would be directed towards the teams that will be on campus over
intersession.
- Dr. Bruening expressed an interest
in books that ‘send a good message’ to readers, for the Catholic Worker House,
who is in need of books. The collection will be at the book Drive in
February.
- Kydani Dover spoke about her
intentions to get athletes together to visit Fox Middle School in Hartford
December 3rd. The trip should take about 3 hours (12-3).
- Leah Williams, Community Service
Chair, stressed the importance of team involvement for community service
projects. Not only S.A.A.C. members should attend. Reach out for support from
your teammates.
- Bill Shults brought up the topic of
team donations to benefit the Tri-Town Shelter. (S.A.A.C.) will also donate
toys to this charity. We will be looking for teams to donate money.
- Also, anyone who can find the
time in his or her schedule, and would like to be there to drop off
donations, is welcome to come. The Willimantic Soup Kitchen, who serves
over 200 meals a day, recently gave us a tour.
- December 10th is the
annual Cornerstone Christmas party, from 6pm to 10pm. We would like to have
as many athletes participate as possible. We will leave campus at 6pm and car
pool to St. Bernard’s Church in Rockville-Vernon.
- Jessie Lennon is interested in the
idea of an Athlete Semi-Formal, and looking for volunteers to help her plan.
The Semi is tentatively being planned for the February/March time frame.
- Gaye Tuchman, P.A.A.C. Chair of
Student Life Committee, spoke at the meeting encouraging the athletes to come
to her with any questions or concerns, as she serves to bridge the gap between
students and student-athletes.
- Members expressed concern with the
shrinking availability of morning classes. Gaye has sent out an email
requesting class concerns from all teams.
- Joel Legare asked for ideas for the
www.saac.uconn.edu website. He is looking to create something interactive
for members to communicate, discuss, with poll information.
- The True Blue Husky Crew is asking
teams to contact the group with dates of their big home contests, in which
they would like a little extra support.
- In National S.A.A.C. news, NCAA is
looking to increase the number of consecutive days of practice.
- Next Month’s meeting will be held
at Willington Pizza (Dec 12th) and the Guest Speaker will be Dr.
John Saddlemire (Vice President for Student Affairs).
